God is setting the agenda for His Church in this season we have entered in the Church age. We have been looking at the things that He is emphasizing and focusing on. It is my hope that as we begin to understand what He is doing that we will lay aside our agenda and become seriously involved with seeing His will done on earth as it is in Heaven.
The fourth emphasis right now for His people is the call or mandate on the Church to seek and save the lost. This is not new as it was and is the main call on the church – to be apostolic (sending out) and prophetic (supernatural gifts functioning) to touch the lost with the love of God as found only in Jesus. And, of course, to share the Gospel of the Kingdom (see the four blogs posted before this one in the series).
Luke 19:10 sets out Jesus’ mandate. It states, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
Matthew 28:18-19a sees Jesus giving that mandate to His Church – “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…'”
Fairly straight forward – we have a job to do and Jesus is now asking His Church to become involved with what He is doing for He continues to seek and save the lost through those who declare Him to be Lord.
As we seek and save the lost we have a second part to that call – We are called to make disciples – not converts or believers or church attendees.
Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations
This includes four levels after being born again through repentance:
Disciple – teaching all that is needed for baby to grow into maturity and who you are in Christ
Train – in the doctrines of the church (10 basic ones)
Equip – in the supernatural gifts and callings
Mentoring – tucked under the wing of a mature leader integrating practical ministry and life into one healthy whole
This is a lifestyle and will take a life time of work to fulfill for each one of us. However, this is what Jesus wants us focused on and I can see nowhere in the Bible where He gives His disciples a choice as to whether they will connect to this cause or not. As disciples of the Lord we are called to be fishers of men and if we are not fishing then we are not following.
It is time to take a good look at your life and the life of the church that you attend and make whatever adjustments are needed to focus on fulfilling His call and to become involved in what He is doing today.
