WHY We Don’t Hear God Regularly

The Bible states:

“All people have sinned and fail to fulfill God’s plan and purpose for their life”

Romans 3:23

“The wages (consequence) of that sin is death”… separation from God now and for all eternity

Romans 6:23a

“While we were yet sinners God sent His Son Jesus to pay the penalty for our sin” because He loves us and wants to have a personal relationship with us

Romans 5:8

This is the Good News … The Gospel

God loves

God gives

We believe

We receive … John 3:16

“The gift of God is eternal life” when we accept His death as payment for our sin and when we repent (change thinking) and ask for His forgiveness

Romans 6:23b

This “gift of eternal life” is a personal, daily, in-depth, ever-deepening, dynamic and excitingly, unique love relationship with God

John 17:3

To have this or any relationship a person needs to hear the other person, see the other person, and touch the other person

My relationship with my wife … see, hear, touch

My relationship with God … see, hear, touch

1 John 1:1-3 “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Fellowship … to know, to talk to, to hear, and to spend time together with God

Individually and then, as often as possible, together with other believers

So, because we have this ability – gift – to relate to God on a personal level…

1> Believers – disciples – people who are born again (born physically and then born again spiritually) … true believers hear God’s voice on a regular basis

“My sheep hear My voice…”  John 10:3

“My sheep know My voice…” John 10:4

“My sheep follow (obey) My voice…” John 10:16

2> If a born again disciple of Jesus is not hearing God’s voice on a regular basis then:

A> Have not learned how to listen and hear… discerning which voice is God’s voice

B> Are hearing God’s voice but simply don’t recognize it is God speaking

The Bible states that you hear God … I believe the Bible and not your experience

C> Expect God to speak inside your box – your desires – your will – your dreams – your safety and comfort zone

#1 reason people don’t hear God or recognize the voice that is God’s voice

As believers they want God to bless what they are doing and keep them safe, secure, and comfortable

Bless – prosper – guard – guide – direct – protect – promote

Not once, as far as I can see, did God speak to a person in the Bible and tell them something they really wanted to hear

Isaiah – Walk naked through the city for 3 years

Ezekiel – Lay on his side in public for 430 days and cook    food over dried human poop

Amos – Marry a prostitute who would cheat on him

Mary – Pregnant as a young unmarried teenager

We want God to do things for us and speak blessings into our lives… and so we do not hear Him when He is speaking things that are challenging, confronting, stretching and life-changing

Things we simply don’t want to hear

Things that are out of our comfort zone

Things that are outside our self-designed safety box

D> God is simply being quiet and is currently not speaking anything new to you

We assume if we don’t hear God for a time or a season that He must be mad at us

Not true! It does not mean that something is wrong!!

If you are in a “quiet season” simply continue to walk in the same direction that you are going

Don’t stop moving forward with the last thing that God spoke to you

Don’t stand still in your relationship waiting for God to correct you or chastise you … it is simply a “quiet season”

Simply continue to do what you have been doing according to the last time that you sense His direction or heard His voice

E> You have not followed through on the last thing that the Holy Spirit spoke to you

Something that spoke to your heart out of your morning Bible reading

Something God imparted quietly into your heart during a time of prayer

Something spoken to you through the advice of a trusted friend and believer

Something God spoke to you prophetically through an apostle or prophet or a            believer flowing in the gifts of the Holy Spirit

He has spoken with regard to His plan and purpose for your life…

What He wants you to do

When He wants you to do it (question of timing)

Where He wants you to do (accomplish) this

With whom are you going to do this (team – target group)

Why He is telling you to do this certain thing

So, God is not to be ignored and He will often not speak again until we have moved forward on what we have already heard

It seems that God expects us to act on what He speaks…

And, what is the purpose of Him speaking to His child (you) if you are simply going to ignore what He speaks?

Could use such words as: Rebellion

Remember, Jesus said, “If you love me, you will obey Me.”

So, lack of follow through could be a lack of passion and love for Jesus

F> You are not hearing God’s voice because you are not “listening” to what He has already spoken in His written Word, the Bible

Let’s unpack that last one … looking at specific things God has clearly spoken to us in the Bible

These are “the basics” and as we work thought these and work with these ‘mandates’ for the Church and thus for us because we are the Church

As we accomplish “the basics” then we will hear God much clearer and more accurately as we relate to Him day by day in our amazing walk with Him

“The basics” as we see them in the New Testament….

The foundation for a continuing relationship and the ability to hear God the Holy Spirit clearly and accurately as He guides and directs us in our daily lives

What He has told us to do….

1> Grounded in love – Be rooted and grounded in His love

Love God with all of your being – heart, mind, soul, strength (Matthew 22:37)

Love yourself – because God created you and designed you and you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Matthew 22:39)

Love all others – believers and non-believers (Matthew 22;39)

Love unconditionally as He loves you

Accept them as they are because He accepts you as you are

Forgive them totally because you are totally forgiven

Ephesians 3:17 “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love…”

2> Go into your world on a daily basis and look for opportunities to tell others about Jesus

Matthew 28:19-20 “As you go about your daily, everyday life…”

Testifying “…the hope that is with in you…”

1 Peter 3:15 “…but in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect…”

3> Guard your heart and head (mind)

Romans 12:1-2 “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

What we read, watch and listen to affects us in our born again spirit (heart) and moulds what we think about (head) and eventually believe and become

4> Good works – touch others with acts of kindness

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

John 14:12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”

Miracles, signs, and wonders are to follow the believers… Mark 16:17-18

Right now we chase after them… they should be following after us

We are to walk in supernatural power and confirm our message to the world through miracles, signs, and wonders

5>  Gripped by His Word

1 Corinthians 15:1-2 “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

Philippians 2:16 “… holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.”

Collisions 3:16a “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…”

As believers we are called to “tremble at His Word” (Isaiah 66:5)

6> Guided and directed by the Holy Spirit

God gave to us “another Comforter” who would do for us what Jesus did when walking with His disciples in the pages of the New Testament …

Guide; direct; teach; lead….

John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.”

1 John 2:27 … Holy Spirit – the Teacher – lives within us and teaches us….

7> Giving to others

We are to become like God and He is an extremely giving God… very generous and pouring our abundant blessings

“…blessing up on blessing heaped upon us” (John 1:16)

“More blessed to give than to receive…” (Acts 20:35)

Giving of our love, time, effort, emotion, encouragement, support…

Actively engaged and giving – – – Not simply passively receiving

8> Governed by the Holy Spirit (controlled)

Ephesians 5:18 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit…”

When drunk the alcohol controls or governs your thoughts, words, attitude, and actions

The Holy Spirit must “govern” our thoughts, words, actions, and attitude as born again Christ followers

Then we will actually, without too much thought, walk in #9

9> Glorifying God in our thoughts, words, attitude, and actions

10> Gifts of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 … nine supernatural gifts that come to us and reside in us when we are baptized in the Holy Spirit and receive the power of God

Working of Miracles

Gifts of Healings

Special Faith

Public Tongues

Interpretation of Public Tongues

Word of Wisdom

Word of Knowledge

Discerning of Spirits

These gifts are given to us so we can be a witness to the resurrection of Jesus from the dead

Acts 1:8 “And you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be My witnesses…”

Not “do” witnessing …. “be” a witness

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 “… and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”

11> Grafted in to the local church – What the Bible calls ‘the Body of Christ’

Connected, engaged, active, functioning, interdependent

1 Corinthians 12:18 “But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.”

These are the foundational things we are called to and the way we are called to live as followers of Jesus

Often, when we ignore all or any of these, the voice of God is not heard as often nor does He speak as loudly

As we live life His way … we position ourselves to hear His voice on a regular and consistent basis as we go about our normal, daily life.

And, to have a personal relationship with God you really do need to hear His voice…

“My sheep hear My voice…”  John 10:3

“My sheep know My voice…” John 10:4

“My sheep follow (obey) My voice…” John 10:16
