An Apostolic Understanding – Part Seven

We are looking at the Church that Jesus is building. It is apostolic in nature and Kingdom focused. This led us to looking at various aspects of the Kingdom. Let’s complete that today.

So far in the last two blogs we have seen that:

1> Kingdom deals with power confirming the Word
2> The Kingdom has a fivefold ministry governmental structure
3> There is a King that all Kingdom inhabitants submit to
4> Every member is a minister and must discover their rightful place of ministry
5> The Kingdom has a culture all of its own.
6> The Kingdom is here and now upon the earth
7> God’s Kingdom is not based on worldly patterns
8> Kingdom needs to be revealed to each believer
9> You cannot delay or postpone the Kingdom
10> A Kingdom mentality will give you a “scattering” structure

11> Kingdom has a ‘presence’ mentality. Those involved seek and know the presence of God. They are not need-driven they are presence-driven. People who are Kingdom minded know that unless God’s presence is established the Church will not move forward into fulfilling it’s Kingdom mandate. You can go to church, gather, fellowship, meet people, and enjoy interacting without impacting or even influencing the future or society. Of course, you can do this in most worldly or secular events and organizations as well. For Kingdom people this is simply never enough as good as it may be. We are presence-driven.

12> The Kingdom is at war with the domain of darkness. Kingdom people understand the spiritual forces that the devil has established that oppose the advancement of the Kingdom. And, as Jesus said when speaking with the disciples of John the Baptist, “the violent take the Kingdom by force.” You cannot be passive if you want to be a part of the Kingdom and its advancement. You must by aggressive, filled with zeal, energetic, passionate, and full of life. Lethargic and apathetic status quo maintainers are not Kingdom people even though they may be church members.

So, there comes a time when wineskins change. The Lord has a day for a structure that has been in place to make a shift. The Lord initiates the season of change and we are currently in such a season. We choose if we want to be involved and be productive in the Kingdom or if we will simply sit it out and become or remain non-productive.

In this new season we will see a continuing emphasis on the ministry of the apostle and the prophet as they begin to work together more often as a team. We will see the Gospel of the Kingdom being planted in spiritually dark places where there is currently no church. We will come to understand and receive the fullness of Jesus’ ministry by welcoming the fivefold ministry that has been raised up and see the Spirit remove the solo pastor leadership style now predominant in most churches. And, we will see the return of prominent regional churches like we see in the Book of Acts in cities like Jerusalem, Antioch, Ephesus, and elsewhere.

An Apostolic Understanding – Part Six

We are looking at the Kingdom and some of the difference between the Kingdom and the current expression of the Church. Last time we examined and commented on the fact that:

1> Kingdom deals with power confirming the Word
2> The Kingdom has a fivefold ministry governmental structure
3> There is a King that all Kingdom inhabitants submit to
4> Every member is a minister and must discover their rightful place of ministry

Let’s keep moving forward in our understanding …

5> The Kingdom has a culture all of its own. Every people group has a culture and the people of the Kingdom all come from different backgrounds and cultures. But, the Kingdom also has a unique and different culture. And, if we conform to the worldly and generational culture around us we will never embrace the unique Kingdom culture. We need to understand Kingdom culture, embrace it, and then express it in the way that we live and relate to others. Thus we become a counter-culture and not just another sub-culture.

6> The Kingdom is here and now upon the earth. We have yet to experience the Kingdom in its fullness. That will happen when Jesus returns. However, we can experience the Kingdom that is currently on the earth and expanding as more people come to accept the Gospel of the Kingdom. The Kingdom is not just ‘out there’ somewhere. It has established God’s rule upon the earth and is everywhere a believer lives. We are ambassadors of that Kingdom as Paul states in 2 Corinthians 5:21. So, we need to demonstrate God’s rule in the earth realm as His ambassadors.

7> God’s Kingdom is not based on worldly patterns. As a result, it is often misunderstood and even misrepresented. Those who understand the Kingdom and are expressing Kingdom on the earth are “working out their salvation with fear and trembling.” Those who are simply church attenders are often critical of those who are moving forward and striving to make a difference for the Kingdom. Many are misunderstood.

8> Kingdom needs to be revealed to each believer. You can’t understand it simply by reading and studying the Bible. Yes, Jesus speaks a great deal about the Kingdom and uses a large number of parables to give us an indication of what the Kingdom looks like. However, to truly understand the Kingdom a believer needs to receive a revelation from God regarding His Kingdom. Kingdom has to be revealed to you.

9> You cannot delay or postpone the Kingdom. When God is ready to move, He will move. We are in such a time of change and shifting in the spirit realm. God is moving. We must stay in touch with the changes. We cannot express the Kingdom in the world in which we live every day life if we are out of touch with the changes the Spirit is making in the Kingdom. And, even when in touch with the current moves and changes in the Kingdom, a believer needs to learn how to express the Kingdom (and the changes) in the earthly domain so that non-believers can understand and receive the revelation and enter into the Kingdom.

10> A Kingdom mentality will give you a “scattering” structure. If you have a Church mentality you will work with a “gathering” mentality. A Church mentality is program-driven and will be designed to meet the needs of the people. A Kingdom mentality focuses on the expansion of the Kingdom, the scattering of workers into the harvest field, and the salvation of souls.

An Apostolic Understanding – Part Five

There is a difference between Kingdom and Church. We need to understand this difference.

The Kingdom is the whole of God’s redeeming activity in Christ in the world. The Kingdom includes all of the current strategies of the King that He is manifesting in the variety of societal structures in each nation. So, the Kingdom is much bigger than the Church but includes the Church that Jesus is building. Those who are in the Church and moving with what the Spirit is doing will manifest the attributes of the Kingdom and thus make the Kingdom visible in the culture and society in which they live.

The Church is the assembly of those who belong to Jesus. As the members make a shift in their focus and priorities from Church to Kingdom they, the Church, will begin manifesting Kingdom. Together they will manifest greater Kingdom power than we can exhibit alone. And, as we focus on Kingdom and not just the inner workings of Church life we will be sent out to do the real work of the Kingdom. This means those who understand the season we are entering will become apostolic in nature.

The word ‘apostle’ simply means ‘the sent one.’ So, as the assembly of believers become Kingdom minded they will be sent into the world by the Holy Spirit. They will become ‘the send ones’ or apostolic in nature – both in their lifestyle, their perspective, and their work for Jesus. They will truly live a life that embraces Matthew 28:19, “Go into al the world and make disciples…” Kingdom people will be sent out to do Kingdom work and they will go willingly regardless of personal cost.

Let’s do a quick, somewhat surface look at the Kingdom to begin appreciating what God is doing as we shift from a Church to Kingdom perspective.

1> Kingdom deals with power because the Lord does not only declare His Word, but He performs His Word manifesting His power to confirm the Word. As this happens in the world He will be attracting people to Himself. In 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul, an apostle, talks about not having programs or fancy approaches but simply “demonstrating God” by walking in His power and releasing it among those who do not know Him. The word ‘demonstrate’ in the Greek means ‘to put God on public display’ or, ‘to exhibit God.’ So, Paul would share the Gospel of the Kingdom in a simple way and then God would confirm the word with signs and wonders. This is Kingdom.

2> The Kingdom has a government. Unlike the Church which is often led by a solo pastor who works hand-in-hand with an eldership, the Kingdom functions with a fivefold ministry team under the headship of Christ. There is no early ‘head’ such as a senior pastor or a bishop leading in the Kingdom . The government of the Kingdom consists of a team comprised of apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers. These five ministries coming together represent the five aspects of Jesus’ ministry. And, they work under His headship as they work to expand the impact and influence of the Kingdom in the earth.

3> Because we are talking about Kingdom we recognize that there must be a King. His Name is Jesus. He has sovereign rule within His Kingdom. And, those who want to a part of the Kingdom must submit to His authority. This means Jesus is more than Saviour of an individual. He is Lord of everyone who calls on His Name and every believer must submit to and obey the King.

4> Each individual who is part of the Kingdom must find their place in the work of the Kingdom. We cannot be like Israel at the end of the Book of Judges where “everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” You can’t do what you want and express the Kingdom. You cannot fulfill “your ministry” and be a part of what is transpiring within the Kingdom. It is always His ministry. People who refuse to discover their rightful place, calling, or position in this new season cannot operate in the ultimate expression God desires for them.

An Apostolic Understanding – Part Four

In every generation the Lord needs to rebuild His Church so that His Kingdom can be better manifested in the earth. Because of the major and massive changes in the lifestyle and beliefs, perspective, and world view of each generation the Church needs to embrace changes to the way it expresses the heart of God. The message never changes but the methods through which we present the message must change with the seasons and the generational adjustments to how life is lived.

Jesus understood this need for change as His Kingdom responds to changes in the culture and in society generation to generation. Jesus is approached, in Matthew 9 by a number of John the Baptist’s disciples. They are coming from an old wineskin with questions for the new wineskin that Jesus is establishing and forming. In the 11th chapter Jesus explains more fully, in response to John’s questions, what He is doing.

Matthew 11:3, 5-6 “Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’ … Jesus answered, ’the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.’”

Jesus is saying, “Go and tell John that I am doing everything he prophesied would be done in this new season.” Then He added, “Blessed is he who is not offended by Me.” That should be a warning to us. Jesus is saying, “If your disciples don’t get offended by the way I am doing things in this new season, they can move forward from the old wineskin which was good in its season into the new. But they must choose not to get offended.”

After John’s disciples leave Jesus speaks very highly of John and the ministry he had been given by God (Matthew 11:7, 9-11). He states that up to this point there has not been a greater man than John, but we are moving into a new season of paving the way for the establishment and spreading of the Kingdom.

Jesus continues, “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John…” (Matthew 11:12-13). In other words, all the prophets prophesied up till now. The Law was developed and ruled up to this point in history, but something is about to shift. Everything they had experienced until that time had been okay; in fact, it had been good and necessary. However, now things were going to shift and change. Jesus was saying that they needed to see and understand the shift.

Essentially, Jesus was telling John that He was fulfilling all of the things that had been prophesied. If one is not offended at the changes, you will see prophecy being fulfilled. Otherwise, offence blinds us to what is happening in the Church and the Kingdom.

The same is true today. As changes continue to happen and become more and more obvious some will be offended. They want things to remain as they are. They don’t want to change because they appreciate what seems safe, secure, and comfortable. They want to maintain the status quo. They like what they have.

I mentioned in a previous blog a church I had been working with for a substantial length off time which has refused to grasp and cooperate with what is happening today in the Church and the Kingdom. At the worst, they rejected the teachings. At best, they ignored them. So, they refused to move forward into the changes that are taking place – changes that are happening with or without them. They have chosen to not be a part of what the Lord is doing. So, His life (presence, power, and peace) will no longer be experienced even in the very limited way they have been seen and experienced on occasion. God will leave them where they are and not disturb them. They will continue with their religion. Some who are hungry for the fulness of the current move of the Holy Spirit will go elsewhere but the majority will simply go on with ‘business as usual.’

However, God will ‘move on’ and find others in the area whose hearts and minds are open to what He is doing today in the Church and in His Kingdom and begin to manifest Himself to them as they follow the Spirit. In God’s heart it is never ‘business as usual.’

The New Wineskins – An Apostolic Model

The Parable of the two doors

There was this guy who nicked his foot while mowing the grass.

The man showed the wound to his wife, and she didn’t know what to do. So he thought he better get down to the Emergency Room to get it checked out.

So he went to the hospital, walked through the Emergency Room front doors, and when he entered, he was greeted by two more doors. One door was marked “Male,” and the other was marked “Female.” So he went through the door marked “Male.”

When he got inside, there were two more doors. One door said “Under 40.” The other door said “Over 40.” So he walked through the door marked “Over 40.” Read more

An Apostolic Understanding – Part Three

It has become very obvious to those who are in touch with the heart of God that we have entered a season where the focus is no longer the Church. For the last two if not three decades He has been preparing us to look past the trees and see the forest… to look past the Church and see the Kingdom. Many have missed seeing the forest because they are so busy with maintaining a tree – the Church as it is – safe, comfortable, and secure. However, others have noticed that the Lord is bringing major change to His Church so that His Kingdom can be better manifested in the earth.

So, Jesus is establishing – some say reestablishing – a Kingdom structure within the Church so that the Kingdom can continue to expand into spiritually dark places and the last days harvest can begin. He is taking us from seeing one tree to seeing the forest – from looking at the local church to seeing Him establish regional apostolic centers that reflect what the Lord is doing on the earth today. These apostolic centers, also to be known as ‘regional churches,’ will be the focus of the Kingdom in the next several decades and have been spoken about by many, including this author, for almost two decades preparing those who have ears to hear for such a time as this.

Seventeen years ago I started work with a small group of believers and saw the great potential they had and also had an understanding, an apostolic sense, of what the Lord wanted to accomplish in them and through them. I worked for over four years laying some very basic foundations both on Sundays and through a discipleship school. The growth in the believers was amazing. Then 13 years ago I taught on a Sunday about the new move of the Spirit and the founding of regional apostolic centers as resource centers and outposts in the Kingdom. Like the Church of Antioch in Acts 13. There was a call to respond and begin to implement changes that were needed to release life and power. No one responded.

I spent the next 13 years teaching and believing that as the leaders and people saw what God was doing and what was possible as Kingdom people they would respond. Over and over again at leaders meetings I would ask for a commitment from them to move in this apostolic direction and no loner hold to the pastoral model of the church and hope that one day they would be large enough to hire a full-time pastor. Much was accomplished during this period of time including the building of an amazing home for the church. However, there was never a solid or serious commitment to move the church into its future and into what the Lord was doing in His Church around the world.

Thirteen years after the first offer to become a regional church, an apostolic center, I shared a similar teaching about what God was doing and the raising up of apostolic centers that would be regional churches helping others enter into the fullness of what God is doing today in His Kingdom. I mentioned that it was thirteen years since God first made this offer to that local church and that He was giving them a second opportunity to respond. There was no visible response.

Eventually, within four weeks, I was asked to stop teaching on apostles and prophets, the apostolic model, the fivefold ministry, the gifts of the Holy Spirit – especially prophecy – and just teach the basics once again. They wanted teachings on the character of God, the nature of God, the love of God, and a constant repeating of the Gospel of salvation (not the gospel of the Kingdom which is the only gospel that is biblical). In other words, they wanted a middle-of-the-road pastor and not an apostle. Someone who would allow the sheep to feel safe, secure, and comfortable and not challenge them to become all that God had spoken over the local church.

The end of October, 2017 was my last day working with the people of that local church and its leaders. It is time to find a people who will respond to what the Lord is doing in His Church, among His people, and in the Kingdom today. Time to move in my calling as an apostle.

From generation to generation and season to season, the Lord rebuilds His Church so His Kingdom can be better manifested in the earth. We are in such a season. And, we need to respond to what the Spirit is saying and doing.

An Apostolic Understanding – Part Two

We have entered a season, in the Kingdom and thus in the Church, of major changes. Jesus, the head of the Church, is telling us that even though everything seems to be in order in the Church in this last season, we need to be ready for the changes He is bringing to His Church.

The Book of Daniel, an Old Testament prophetic look at the times we live in, tells us that “the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action” (Daniel 11:32). Another version states it this way, “They that know their God will do mighty exploits.” And, as true born again believers, we have a personal daily relationship with God and know Him.

When we were born again and the “wages of sin” were removed from our lives, we were given a special gift that the Bible calls eternal life (Romans 6:23). This gift is defined in John 17:3 as the supernatural ability given to us when we are saved to have a personal, daily, ever deepening, unique, love relationship with the Living God and Jesus whom He sent. So, according to the book of Daniel, because we know God we are to moving in supernatural power and seeing many ‘mighty exploits’ through our life and ministry.

Jesus said this as well. Speaking to His disciples He said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to My father” (John 14:12). I believe we are in that season of “greater things” and we need to be leaving the old traditions and religious thinking behind (see the previous blog) and move forward in the things that Jesus is currently doing in and through His Church.

Jesus said, after Peter’s revelation of who Jesus was, “Blessed [happy, spiritually secure, favoured by God] are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood (mortal man) did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades (death) will not overpower it [by preventing the resurrection of the Christ]. I will give you the keys (authority) of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven.” Then He gave the disciples strict orders to tell no one that He was the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed).”

Peter’s revelation direct from the Father’s heart released a prophetic word from Jesus about the work of the Church as believers walk in the authority that He has given to each one of us (see Matthew 28:18). I believe that as we respond to the move of the Holy Spirit we are now entering we will become truly apostolic in nature … moving in authority and power in the world seeing many come into the Kingdom and become true disciples of Jesus.

As a result we will build a new prototype of the Church for today. This new apostolic-prophetic Church will be aggressive and even ‘violent’ as we take the Kingdom by force (Matthew 11:12). We will unlock a Kingdom mentality that hell cannot withstand. There is an apostolic Church arising that will go beyond anything we have ever seen or known in the past. To understand this Apostolic Church I will be looking at the first apostolic church as found in the pages of the New Testament as we return to the original plan Jesus had for His Church – a plan that, in the history of the early Church, was soon derailed by the early leaders of the Church after the death of the original twelve apostles.

The Fullness of the Gospel

There is a young man in Scriptures by the name of Philip – Mid 20’s

His name is a Greek name so history assumes he is a Jewish man who was born to                    Greek parents now living in Israel

There is an early disciple of Jesus named Philip (John, chapter 1) who was one of the                 12 apostles but there is no indication that it is the same Philip

This Philip first appears in Acts 6 as one of the seven deacons who were in charge of                 feeding the widows (Acts 6:5) in the Church in the city of Jerusalem Read more

An Apostolic Understanding – Part One

There is a new move of God happening today in every nation where Jesus is preached. It is an apostolic move that will be seriously prophetic and evangelistic in nature. To understand the move we must look back to the first Church as recorded in the New Testament, understand the principles of the way God moves when change is happening, discover what He is saying to His Church today, and then understand God’s plan for His Church in this new season. This will require an apostolic-prophetic approach to life in the Church as they are the leaders in any change in the Kingdom and the Church (1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 2:20; 4:11-12)

The prophetic operates on four levels – personal, corporate, territorially, and generationally. The Spirit of God is now bringing changes to the Church that will have a tremendous affect in all four of these areas of life and society. Thus, we need to be listening to and heeding what the Spirit is saying to the Church today.

The apostolic gives the people an understanding of the culture that they are working in and the larger religious and spiritual context of life. Apostles are able to contextualize the Gospel of the Kingdom to the location being targeted for Kingdom expansion. The apostles also train God’s people how to reach out into their context and present the Gospel in a way that it can be understood and received.

God is doing something “new” in the Church so as to increase the impact and influence of the Church in the world today.

The Greek word for ‘new’ is ‘neos.’ This has two meanings. First it could mean something that has never happened before. Secondly, it can mean something in the process of going from what is to what needs to be, a new quality being formed or forming in a new way. I believe the change today includes both the old changing into the new and some totally new aspects of life in the Church.

So, change is in the wind and the Holy Spirit is speaking loudly and clearly about this change through the apostles and prophets that have been released in the Kingdom and within the Church. They are announcing that this is a supernatural season of change because God is renovating the house.

The issue that arises is this: We think we have everything in order and we are ready for whatever is going to happen. However, this is not true. There are many things in the Church that we think are biblical and they are seriously not. There are many things we believe are biblical and they are simply tradition or even folklore, or worse, pagan. And so we have nullified God’s Word and thus His work by embracing our traditions thinking they are of God when they are not.

So, there is a major season of change in progress and we can either ignore it and miss out; fight it and find ourselves opposing God; or we can follow the lead of the Spirit as expressed by the apostles and move forward in the current move of God as the Kingdom expands and the Church prepares for the great harvest of the end times.

Thus God speaks and says: “So don’t turn a deaf ear to these gracious words. If those who ignored earthly warnings didn’t get away with it, what will happen to us if we turn our backs on heavenly warnings? His voice that time shook the earth to its foundations; this time—he’s told us this quite plainly—he’ll also rock the heavens: “One last shaking, from top to bottom, stem to stern.” The phrase “one last shaking” means a thorough housecleaning, getting rid of all the historical and religious junk so that the unshakable essentials stand clear and uncluttered.” (Hebrews 12:25-27 The Message Version)
