Meeting or Movement?

We go to church meetings … one, two, three a week

Mary had a little lamb
She grew up to be a sheep Then she became a Christian And died from lack of sleep

Jesus did not come to establish a “meeting” He came to establish a “movement”

Jesus is not really focused or interested in another “meeting” He is looking for His people to release a “movement”

Meetings – something we do, an activity
Movement – helping the church to be and working to become

Bringing transformation and change to lives everywhere Jesus did not say, “Go into all the world and hold meetings”

He did indicate that we were to “go into all the world and multiply (make disciples)” Multiply = disciples making disciples who make disciples who make disciples

This is what The Great Commission is all about

Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Jesus said that to pour out “new wine” (a movement, a new move of the Spirit) That He would need new wineskins

Old wineskins can no longer stretch or expand so if you pour new, still fermenting, wine into them the gas released by the fermentation process will destroy the wineskin as it cannot expand

And then the wine is lost as well
Wineskin = a new form of the church build according to the New Testament Wine = a fresh move of the Holy Spirit

Matthew 9:17 “Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

Meeting – the old // Movement – the new

We need the new wineskin to hold everything that is being restored to the Church in our day and age

Acts 3:21 “(Jesus), whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.”

In the past we have seen many moves of the Holy Spirit and thus many new wineskins…

1680 Evangelical Movement (born again message) 1801 Holiness Movement
1901 Pentecostal Movement
1960’s Charismatic Movement

1970’s Modern House Church Movement New wineskins…

More meetings are good if – and that is a big IF – they are contributing to the release of the next movement

The next move of the Spirit The next move of God

Contributing by equipping the saints for the work of the ministry Contributing by seeing lives delivered and transformed

No longer meetings for the sake of meetings

A Parable: The Lighthouse

On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur there was once a crude little lifesaving station. The building was just a hut, and there was only one boat, but the few devoted members kept a constant watch over the sea, and with no thought for themselves went out day and night tirelessly searching for the lost. Many lives were saved by this wonderful little station, so that it became famous. Some of those who were saved, and various others in the surrounding area, wanted to become associated with the station and give of their time and money and effort for the support of its work. New boats were bought and new crews trained. The little lifesaving station grew.

Some of the members of the lifesaving station were unhappy that the building was so crude and poorly equipped. They felt that a more comfortable place should be provided as the first refuge of those saved from the sea. So they replaced the emergency cots with beds and put better furniture in the enlarged building. Now the lifesaving station became a popular gathering place for its members, and they decorated it beautifully and furnished it exquisitely, because they used it as a sort of club. Fewer members were now interested in going to sea on lifesaving missions, so they hired lifeboat crews to do this work. The lifesaving motif still prevailed in this club’s decoration, and there was a liturgical lifeboat in the room where the club initiations were held. About this time a large ship was wrecked off the coast, and the hired crews brought in boatloads of cold, wet, and half-drowned people. They were dirty and sick, and some of them had black skin and some had yellow skin. The beautiful new club was in chaos. So the property committee immediately had a shower at house built outside the club where victims of shipwreck could be cleaned up before coming inside.

At the next meeting, there was a split in the club membership. Most of the members wanted to stop the club’s lifesaving activities as being unpleasant and a hindrance to the normal social life of the club. Some members insisted upon lifesaving as their primary purpose and pointed out that they were still called a lifesaving station. But they were finally voted down and told that if they wanted to save the lives of all the various kinds of people who were shipwrecked in those waters, they could begin their own lifesaving station down the coast. They did.

As the years went by, the new station experienced the same changes that had occurred in the old. It evolved into a club, and yet another lifesaving station was founded. History continued to repeat itself, and if you visit that sea coast today, you will find a number of exclusive clubs along that shore. Shipwrecks are frequent in those waters, but most of the people drown!

Think about a surfer…

The waters are calm but the surfer paddles out in anticipation Wanting to catch the next wave and ride it into shore

A big wave comes along and he is positioned, ready, waiting to ride it He works to line himself up to ride the way all the way

Amazing ride … an adventure
There are risks involved
It can be dangerous
Many things are unknown – each wave is different
There are many variables – other surfers the wind, weather

The wave and the surfer reach the shore – the ride has been fantastic
The wave Peters out and the undercurrent rakes the water back out to sea The surfer has two basic options at this point….

1> Play in the wet sand

2> Paddle out on the calm and smooth water and position himself for the next wave The wave is the move of God which will bring major change to you and the Church

It is a Kingdom wave with an apostolic-prophetic flavour to it Your choice:

Stay where you are, play in the wet sand, enjoy what you had and have Or…

Paddle out to position yourself for the next wave which, guaranteed, will be vastly different than then last wave

Every denomination and local church started by riding a wave and eventually became a dead church or deceased denomination because they decided to be comfortable, safe and secure

No longer willing to embrace change and wanting to maintain the status quo So, they find themselves playing in the wet sand

And persecuting those who deserted them as they paddled out looking for more

Every move of the Spirit becomes ‘entombed’ because it refuses to change and wants to be safe and secure as well as comfortable

Every new move of God starts with some paddling out and being willing to risk everything for the next wave

Usually people who are experiencing “divine discontent”

Usually young people or, at least, young at heart and hungry for more of God

And those who remain in the wet sand – those who rode the last wave – will persecute those who paddle out waiting for the next wave!

They will not try and understand They do not want to become involved

So, the old wave and the new wave contrasted:

Focus – priority / Church – Kingdom Addition – multiplication

God said: “Be fruitful and multiply”
Jesus said: “Go into al the world and make disciples (multiply).”

Swiss professor: Once calculated that if nothing hindered a single grain of wheat, in only 8 years, it would sufficiently multiply to feed all the inhabitants of Earth for a year.

If there were no bugs to eat the grain, no bad weather, and no drought, it would feed everyone on the Earth for a year.

This is how God works – Multiplication Multiplication and not addition Most believers are thinking – addition

Multiplication is supernatural / addition is natural

So, the old wave and the new wave contrasted (continued):

Format – Function (not caring what it looks like but asking ‘does it work?’) Faithful – Fruitful
Meetings – Movements

Chuck Smith – Calvary Chapel / Born Again

John Wimber – Vineyard / Born Again and Baptized in the Holy Spirit

Maintenance – Ministry (to the lost) Educating – Equipping
Style – Substance
Information – Transformation

So, we are seeing THE KINGDOM WAVE approaching

As a result we will need to look at:

How to ride it
Changes we need to make Necessary focus
The keys to this move / wave

This new wave – the new wineskin is going to require us to make some massive changes The key one being that of embracing a “Kingdom Atmosphere” or Kingdom DNA

The Kingdom DNA consists of:

1> Values – What we consider important
2> Beliefs – Demonstrating what you believe by the way you live
3> Attitudes – having the same mind (attitude) as Jesus had (Philippians 2:5)

4> Priorities – First things first / Major on the majors

5> Worldview – How you see and understand the world

These are massive changes we are facing – so we should remember:

“The task before you is never as great as the power behind you.”

So, we are seeing God bring about a new wineskin – it is being formed….

New understanding New ways of functioning Ne ‘assemblies’
New music
New vantage point
New ways to live
New leadership

Jesus came to set in motion A MOVEMENT – not another meeting Meetings should encourage / release movement
No longer meetings for the sake of meeting

Christian entertainment Christian bless me club

This new movement – the most important, longest-lasting, greatest life-changing movement in history

It will see the spread of the Gospel of the Kingdom into every corner of every nation

Matthew 24:14 “And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”

This Kingdom is alive, growing, powerful, and survives persecution (in fact thrives on persecution), changes lives, impacts nations

This new wave – New wineskin – The Kingdom Movement

Will not start big or move fast It will move slow and go deep

Jesus shows this to us in the way He chose 12 to train for three years – slow and deep

He was creating Kingdom atmosphere in their hearts and lives

It will be the same with us – every believer imprinting others, one person at a time

Every disciple making another disciple Every member a minister

To be a part of this we need to catch the Kingdom Atmosphere Values, Beliefs, Attitudes, Priorities, Worldview

The original disciples caught this worldview over the three years they were with Jesus Jesus constantly taught them about the Kingdom Atmosphere

Kingdom values Kingdom beliefs Kingdom attitudes Kingdom priorities Kingdom worldview

He told them, “My Kingdom is not of this world…”
Jesus’ ultimate mission as a leader was not to develop followers but to make Kingdom disciples

who would multiply and make disciples who would then make disciples….

Jesus was less interested in teaching His disciples what they should do or accomplish and much more interested in who they were becoming

They became Kingdom minded disciples

Yes, some would rise to be leaders because this was their gifting (Romans 12:8) Jesus really did not train them in tasks
He changes the “religious atmosphere” into “Kingdom Atmosphere”

Once the disciples became Kingdom healthy – and walked in the five aspects of the Kingdom Atmosphere

They were ready for the challenges and opportunities that would come their way in life

With a Kingdom focus and Kingdom mentality they would thrive wherever they were

In the midst of massive cultural changes
No matter where they would end up physically
In times of peace or persecution
Without knowing every detail or step that needed to be taken

Bigger than they could handle – overwhelming circumstances

They had a new understanding – Kingdom understanding They had a new wineskin
They walked in the new Kingdom Atmosphere

And, this is where we must be as well …
So, Jesus did not come to establish a meeting

He came to release a movement
Movements tend to socialize if we are not flexible and fluid

Moving forward under the direction of the Spirit – constantly changing

So, CAUTION … don’t settle for playing in the wet sand and don’t turn the lighthouse into a club house.
