Basics of the Christian Faith

2 Corinthians 13:14
The love of God the Father
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ
The Fellowship of the Holy Spirit
Fellowship:
Social interaction
Partnering with
Participating in
The Holy Spirit is a person – He has a personality, purpose, plans

John 14:15-17 – The “stages” of the Holy Spirit:
With:
When not saved – disciples not saved at this point as Jesus has not died
John 16:8-10 – convict the world of sin, righteousness, judgment
In:
When you are born again He comes to live in your spirit
For the disciples – John 20:22
Now you can hear His voice
John 10:
My sheep hear My voice – John 10:2
My sheep know My voice – John 10:3
My sheep obey My voice – John 10:16
There are many voices we can and do hear:
Your generation
Your family
Your friends
Your religious / traditional upbringing
Your music
Your emotions
Your opinions
Demonic forces
Jesus then tells His born again disciples to wait for there is more
Luke 24:49 referring to Joel 2:28-32
Acts 1:5 – It is called the baptism in the Holy Spirit
Acts 1:8 The purpose of the baptism is to be a witness
Water baptism – totally saturated with water
Holy Spirit baptism – totally empowered and enabled by the Holy Spirit
Upon:
Acts 2:1-5 is when this happened for the first disciples / the birth of the Church
With this experience we receive 9 gifts of the Spirit – 1 Corinthians 12:4-11
They can be broken down into three groups
The Power Gifts
Gifts of Healings
Special Faith
Working of Miracles
The Revelation Gifts
Word of Wisdom
Word of Knowledge
Discerning of Spirits
The Inspiration Gifts
Prophecy
(Public) Tongues
Interpretation of (Public) Tongues
To those who are born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit Jesus speaks some very powerful and important words – John 14:12
What were the things that Jesus did?
He prayed
He travelled
He taught
He fellowshipped
He cast out demons
He healed the sick
The lame walked
The deaf heard
The dumb spoke
The blind saw
He raised the dead
He is telling us we are to do what He did and even greater things…
How did Jesus do His ministry?
Yes – He is God but He left His ‘god-ness’ in Heaven and became one of us (Philippians 2:6-8)
Mark 1:9-10
Jesus did not need to be saved or born again as He was without sin and never separated from God
Here we see Jesus being baptized in water as an example for us
He comes out of the water…
The Heavens open
God the Father speaks to God the Son
God the Holy Spirit comes “upon” Him
He was baptized in the Holy Spirit
Until this point He had not performed any miracles, signs, or wonders
Now His supernatural ministry begins
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit He experienced is mentioned elsewhere in the New Testament…
Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”
Acts 10:38 “… how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
He begins to use the 9 supernatural gifts of the Spirit
The gifts that Jesus used:
Word of Knowledge – the woman at the well – John 4:18
Word of Wisdom – speaking to Peter after Jesus rose from the dead – John 21:18-19
Discerning of Spirits – knew the thoughts and intentions of people – Matthew 9:4
Faith – believed everything the Father spoke
Gifts of Healings – He healed everywhere He went – Mark 1:34
Working of Miracles – feeding 5,000 with one small lunch – Mark 6:30-44
Prophecy – He prophesied over Jerusalem about its destruction – Matthew 24:2
Speaking in (public) tongues – no record
Interpreting (public) tongues – no record
When you are baptized in the Holy Spirit these same nine gifts are in you – need to be released
Then the Church (we are the Church) will be “naturally supernatural”
Not spooky
Not scary
Not super-spiritual
Just naturally supernatural in your every day life
Some hints:
Break the religious spirit that is still in your life impacting you
Don’t take yourself so seriously
Get over yourself
Stop worrying about what people might think – what does your Heavenly Father think of you is far more important
Take risks
This is called stepping out in faith – Mark 16:20
Stand up – step out
God will show up and show off
What if nothing happens – What if it does?
