AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY

Last Tuesday … First day back from my recent trip to Russia

An anniversary of an experience I had 39 years ago

February 9, 1977

I had been healed physically by Jesus on November 8, 1976

I had been saved / born again the next night – November 9, 1976

Three months later – February 9th – I was baptized in the Holy Spirit

Let’s look at the flow…

The Bible states:

John 14:17 “… the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither                         sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

The Holy Spirit “with you” as soon as you are born physically into the world

His task is to bring you to the foot of cross of Christ – salvation / born again

John 16:8 “And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and                                     righteousness and judgment…”

Once you respond to His conviction – you are born again

Hear the Good News about Jesus’ death and resurrection

Conviction of sin by the Holy Spirit

Godly sorrow (not worldly sorrow)

Repentance

Confess our sin

Forgiveness

Born Again…

Gospel of the Kingdom // “Repent, for the KIngdom…”

2 Corinthians 7:8-10 NKJV “For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”

The key: Repentance … changing the way you think – changes the way you live

The key: Confess … calling sin what God calls it

The key: Born again – your spirit is now connected to God – “life”

At this point the Holy Spirit comes to live in your born again spirit and God is now “in you”

John 14:17 “… the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

Now you can have a personal relationship with God…

Romans 6:23b “…the gift of God is eternal life”

John 17:3 “This is eternal life; that you may know God the Father and Jesus Christ whom He has sent” // (See, hear, touch – 1 John 1:1-4)

This is foundational to being a true Christian – A disciple of Jesus Christ

Most churches … do not preach this message

People look for teachers who will tickle their ears

2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound                              teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”

This message – The Gospel of the Kingdom – means you have made Jesus Lord (Master)

King, Ruler, Controller, Leader…

This message – The Gospel of the Kingdom – means there are some things we, as disciples-followers of Jesus need to be doing:

“Taking up your cross daily (deny self – die daily) and follow Jesus” (Luke 9:23)

“Dying to self (agenda) and doing God’s will” (Romans 8:13; Colossians 2:20)

“Not My will, but Your will be done” /// The Lord’s Prayer

“Seeking first the Kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33)

“Loving God with your whole heart” (Matthew 22:37)

“Obeying everything He said because you love Him…” (John 14:15)

“Go into all the world and make disciples…” (Matthew 28:19)

And the list could go on and on and on…

But, there is one verse that has always stood out for me

There is one comment Jesus made that has set the tone for my whole life and ministry                      since becoming born again and being a disciple (follower / apprentice) of Jesus…

John 14:12 ““Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the                                   works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father (and will send the Holy Spirit)…”

We are called to do what Jesus did…

Heal the sick … lame walk, blind see, deaf hear, dumb speak, sick get well

Cast out demons

Raise the dead

Make disciples

Reproduce – win people to Jesus – see people born again through your life                             (actions, attitude, lifestyle) and words

If you are born again … this is the call upon your life as a disciple of Jesus

To do the supernatural so that you can win the lost and make disciples

Matthew 4:19 “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men”

Not fishing – Not following

But, you cannot do what Jesus did without what Jesus had…

Mark 1:9-10 “In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased…”

Jesus was Baptized in the Holy Spirit … The Holy Spirit came “upon Him”

Luke 4:18-19 ““The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives                       and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to                            proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour…”

Acts 10:38 “… how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power.             He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was      with him.”

Jesus was baptized in the Holy Spirit (“upon”) and began to move in the supernatural gifts of the Spirit as listed in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Gifts that he used to minister on a daily basis as He touched peoples lives

Jesus spoke to a woman at the well in John, Chapter 4 and during the conversation He asked her to go and fetch her husband and bring him back to meet Him. She said that she did not have a husband. Jesus praised her for speaking the truth and stated that she had previously had 6 husbands and that the man she was living with was not her husband. This is a Word of Knowledge – one of the revelation gifts of the Spirit. Through this gift God reveals something about a person’s past or present that we could not know in the natural. This revelation let’s the person know that you can hear the voice of God, that Jesus is alive, and that He cares.

After His resurrection Jesus appears to Peter, the apostle and in John 21:18 tells us that He declared the way Peter would glorify God in his death. A Word of Wisdom. The supernatural ability to know something about a person’s future that you could not know in the natural – God revealing it to you.

In Matthew 24:2 Jesus is in Jerusalem and prophesies over the city and the temple stating that not one stone would remain upon another. In A.D. 70 Titus, the Roman general, levelled the city. So, Jesus was moving prophetically as He spoke a Word from God over the nation of Israel.

Jesus, of course, flowed in the Gifts of Healings as the Bible states in many places that Jesus healed people. Jesus Himself declares that He was sent to heal in Luke 4:18-19 and that this ministry was a result of being anointed with the Holy Spirit (Baptized in the Spirit). And Luke, writing in Acts 10:38, speaks about the baptism mentioning that Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power and went about healing those oppressed of the devil.

The supernatural gift of the Working of Miracles was seen a number of times in Jesus’s ministry. Changing water into wine (John 2:6-8), feeding a crowd of 5,000 with one little boy’s lunch, walking on water, and the list goes on. This gift interrupts the normal flow of nature – like parting the Red Sea and the sun standing still for 24 hours in Joshua’s day as a battle was fought in the valley.

The Bible states that Jesus knew the thoughts and the intentions of people’s hearts (Matthew 9:4, 12:25). This is the supernatural gift of the Holy Spirit called the Discerning of Spirits which is the ability of being able to see into the spirit realm and see what God sees.

And, of course, He had faith in His heavenly Father and believed the Word of God deeply. He shows us this in many situations but one that stands out is His time of temptation in the wilderness when He tells the devil “It is written….” (Matthew 4:4). This is the power gift called the Gift of (Special) Faith believing for more than what is usually believed for by the average Christian.

Jesus moved in 7 of the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit listed in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11. There is no record of Him Speaking in Tongues (public tongues) or flowing in and ministering through the gift of the Interpretation of Tongues. However, His total ministry was accomplished under the empowering of the Holy Spirit received when He was baptized in the Holy Spirit. This is why it is essential, as disciples of Jesus, that we receive and walk in this experience because then we can see the fulfilment of “the things that I do you will do…” (John 14:12).

So, the Holy Spirit baptism … a second encounter with the living God … is absolutely essential if we are to obey Jesus and do what He did

To do what He did – We need what He had >> He experienced the Baptism in the                                                                                                Holy Spirit

Thus, Jesus said to His born again disciples:

Luke 24:49 “And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in    the city until you are clothed (on the outside of the body – upon) with power from on high.”

The PROMISE OF THE FATHER…”

Joel 2:28-29 ““And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on                   all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream                          dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.”

So, they were to wait for this promise of the Spirit coming upon them!

Acts 1:8a “And you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you                  will be My witnesses…”

NOTE: With you … to bring you to salvation (John 14:12)

In you … when born again living in your spirit (John 14:12)

Upon you … receiving power to witness (Acts 1:8; Luke 24:49)

Power to be “fishers of men”

Power to let people know Jesus is alive

Power to move in the supernatural gifts

Power to live as a true disciple and believer

This is the “full meal deal”

This is the complete message of the Gospel of the Kingdom

There are many churches that don’t believe or teach the Bible

There are a few groups who teach that a person must be born again

There are even fewer that believe in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit

The empowering of believers to do what Jesus did and see the lost won to the Lord

There are very few who actually believe and then do what they have been empowered to do

Others say that they believe in the “full Gospel” but do nothing with the power

Oh, they pray in tongues – but that was not to purpose of the power

In the Book of Acts – the continuation of Jesus’ ministry after His resurrection and ascension

The work of Jesus as accomplished by the early disciples and the Church

The work and ministry of the Holy Spirit through Jesus’ disciples

Nothing happened without the second encounter with the Holy Spirit – the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

Acts, Chapter 2 … the Birth of the Church

Acts 2:3 “…divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested upon each one of them”

Then they began to move in the gifts of the Holy Spirit like Jesus and saw tremendous supernatural things happen

Acts, Chapter 5 … the life of the early believers

Acts 5:12a “Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people…”

Acts, Chapter 8 … Philip’s ministry in the city of Samaria

Acts 8:4-8 – People received Christ because they saw signs and wonders

Acts 8:14-17 – People received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and were empowered

Acts, Chapter 10 … Peter taking the Gospel to the wider world for the first time

Acts 10:44-48 “While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even upon the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.”

I firmly believe that we, the Church today, cannot do what Jesus told us we could do and must do as His witnesses – His disciples – without this second encounter…The Baptism in the Holy Spirit

John 14:12 ““Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father (and will send the Holy Spirit)…”

39 years ago this week I received this second encounter with God

Teach it everywhere I go – overseas, Manitoba…

I believe that it is AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY so that we can fully obey Jesus and do what He has called us to do

To be what He wants the Church to be – Designed the Church to be

I believe every born again believer needs to ask for and receive this baptism of power

Luke 11:9-13 “And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”

God wants every born again believer to receive this gift … this empowering

He knows that without this empowering we cannot be witnesses for Him here and now

The world is asking us to show them why they should believe what we believe

Example: The cult leader in Russia…

We tell them Jesus is the only way to Heaven and that the Bible is the true Word of God

We tell them that Jesus is alive and loves them and knows them – every hair on their head

And, they are saying, “prove it” … Prove to me that Jesus is alive!

And we can do just that IF we are baptized in the Holy Spirit and empowered with the nine gifts of the Spirit.

We can do what Jesus did – the way Jesus did it!

Some here need to be truly born again…

There was simply a saying of a “sinner’s prayer” without repentance when you heard and received the message of the Gospel

They understood in their head – but no decision to change

The Bible states that “without repentance there is no salvation” (2 Corinthians  7:10; 2 Timothy 2:25; Hebrews 6:1)

So … cultural Christian, Christian in name only // There has been little to no change inside your heart and mind

You are “holding to the outward form of the religion but deny the life-changing power” (2 Timothy 3:5)

Others here need to have a second encounter with the Living God and be truly baptized in the Holy Spirit

You need to be empowered and thus enabled to do what Jesus has commanded those who love Him to do…

It is much bigger than a private prayer language where you can now ‘speak in tongues’ and ‘pray in the spirit’

It was really never about that … we have majored on the minors

Mentioned only a few times and not in relationship to our mandate

It has always been about the 9 gifts of the Spirit and being a witness

Your private prayer language is not one of the nine gifts

Some of you are truly born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit and need to simply activate the gifts that were placed within you at that time and truly begin to walk in the supernatural power you have

You need to be less passive and more aggressive

You need to be powerful and not worry about being popular (can’t be both)

You need to “stir up the gifts” placed within you and do what Jesus has told us to do

You need to obey Jesus and use the power and the gifts that you have to win the lost

This Kingdom we are part of is fighting the domain of darkness and it is a supernatural war for the eternal souls of people

1 Corinthians 4:20 “For the Kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power”

Ephesians 6:12 “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood … but against cosmic powers over this present (spiritual) darkness”

2 Corinthians 10:4 “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divinepower to destroy strongholds.”

Your weapons are the 9 supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit received when you  were baptized in the Spirit and the Spirit came upon you and empowered you

CONCLUSION:

I believe it is time to line up with the Bible in a much fuller / deeper way than ever before

I believe everyone of us needs to take a good look at our own life – never mind what you think about someone else or believe the other person should be doing

Take a good look at yourself and determine your next step

Making sure you are truly born again and not just a cultural Christian

Being Baptized in the Holy Spirit and empowered to do what Jesus said to do

Activating / Stirring up the gifts that are within you because you are already empowered and baptized in the Holy Spirit

Becoming active in ministering to the lost and dying on a daily basis with the gifts of the Spirit and seeing people come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ

I will be praying for each one of you…
